Garden Furniture Care

12 December 2009

The garden furniture could be made from a couple of different materials such as glass, metal, natural stone, wood, wicker and rattan. All have their own specific care needs. You may follow some simple rules that will be helpful for keeping your furniture lasting longer and looking good.

First, some general advices: If possible, keep the furniture in the house during the winter. If it is not possible, make certain it is covered. Generally the garden furniture covers are available in the retail outlets, garden centers.

Keep the furniture from the water and avoid direct touch with damp soil for a long period of time. Follow the care instructions of manufacturers.

Second, the advice for the Eucalyptus and Teak Garden Furniture: Eucalyptus and teak are extremely dense hardwoods that are used for centuries for furniture making. Generally they are naturally oily and require almost no treatment for use outdoors or indoors. Using the teak oil will not enhance the life of the timber. The use of the teak oil may deepen the color somewhat but can avoid the stains seeping into timber grain. Also the use of the teak oil may slow down graying effect that is caused by the ultra violet ray.

Eucalyptus and teak can be efficiently cleaned by using the soapy water and a common kitchen cleaning sponge. The application of the polyurethane finish or sealers need to be avoided since the woods are oily meanwhile the sealers don’t stick well, it will result in needing to refinish the woods in the future.

Third, the advice for the hardwood garden furniture: The hardwood furniture is quite easy to be maintained and should be cleaned as frequently as possible, it can be done with one damp cloth dipped in a safe cleaner or dipped in water. If the liquid spill is noticed, immediately it should be removed.
