Install Your Bamboo Floor

You’ve got to admit, having bamboo floors in your home changes your whole interior completely. Many people love this new look that bamboo gives.

There are many types of bamboo that are harvested, but there are not many that can be safely used for flooring purposes. The most commonly used bamboo type for decorating your home floor with is called moso. This grows up to about 40-50 feet high. Once it is harvested it is left out to dry in the sun. Once dry it is then cut into various strips that are given the proper shape. These strips are then laminated and stained and the flooring is ready to be installed. You can find bamboo floors in its natural color and in carbonized amber color. You can also have other colors, depending on what staining method is used to obtain them.

Although bamboo is considered wood, it is actually a special type of flooring which nowadays is heavily competing with the regular hardwood. It is very durable and hard and it is very easy to maintain by vacuuming, by mopping or by spray cleaning.

Another advantage of using this type of wood is the fact that it doesn’t harm much the environment. Bamboo grows fast and once cut, it grows back quickly. Maple or red oak, on the other hand need practically decades to fully mature.

There is nothing special about installing bamboo floors compared to hardwood floors, the process is almost identical. First of all make sure to get the best material around. Then get your subfloor completely dry, clean and without bumps. If you have dirt in between, it will not allow bonding between the subfloor and the bamboo planks. If if is wet, your whole floor will rot eventually. By having an uneven sub-floor, you will hear those squeaky sounds and noises when you walk on the floor and that is very unpleasant to anyone’s ears.

To glue the bamboo planks to the sub-floor, use a moisture floor adhesive. As soon as you’ve placed the adhesive, add the planks on it right away. Then leave them to dry before you can use your floor. Another method of installing it is by using a nail gun over plywood or some kind of board.

Having a bamboo floor at home is truly amazing and it’s the chic thing right now. It lightens up your room and if you have dark corners, those will be strongly diminished when you have this floor type in the room.

Box Sash Windows Basics

In some cases, the common box sash windows have been very popular in classic and modern houses in the United Kingdom and also in the United States. Sash window refers to a kind of window that has sliding panels. These were made usually with a weight supported by a pulley system which was used for opening the panes of the sliding window.

Originally, these kinds of windows were made to fit Victorian and Georgian houses. You can find such kinds of windows in the softwood or hardwood variety today, and in UPVC materials. They originally were glazed in single but modern ones are available as single glazed and double glazed windows.

These olden windows are made with the hollow section inside the window frame that grasps the weight of the sash. The weights of the sash are attached to the sash cord that is then connected to the sliding part of the window pane. It is common for the sash weights in the weight and pulley system to be made out of lead; however, more recent kinds made use of sash weights that are made from steel.

The sash cord which connects to the weight is produced from pre-stretched braided cotton. In addition, it has a polished finish. These materials and finishes allow the cord to resist wear and tear. The new kinds of sash cords are made of newer and synthetic materials and fibres such as polypropylene and nylon. These increases the resistance of the sash cord from abrasion.

Children’s Bedroom Furniture

Buying children’s furniture is not always easy. Sometimes it can be even more complicated than buying furniture for other rooms in your house, because the furniture is actually for someone else: your child. Hopefully these tips will help you make the right choices.

Consider Space Saving Options

Children’s rooms are not usually very large. So picking out furniture that can serve dual purposes often times makes the most sense. Like headboards that can double as a bookcase, or storage chests that double as stairs. Toy chests can make great seats too. Bunk beds are a fantastic option also if two children are sharing a room or for sleepovers. Trundle beds are great too because the second bed can slide underneath the main bed to give a lot more room for your child to play.

Always Think About Safety

You should always look for sturdy furniture that is made well. Children tend to be rough on their furniture so it should be able to withstand a lot of wear and tear. Watch out for obvious safety hazards, such as loose safety rails on bunk beds or ladder that are flimsy or not secured properly.

If you are considering purchasing older or antique furniture make sure that the paint does not contain lead. If you will be painting the furniture yourself, its a good idea to use water based paint. Be sure to check online to see if any safety concerns have been reports with the furniture you are thinking about buying.

Style Still Matters in Your Child’s Room

After you know what you need to buy and you have researched all the safety issues, you need to decide on which style you and your child prefer.Keep in mind before purchasing how long you plan on keeping the furniture. Children can grow up fast and can outgrow things before you know it. Also as they get older their tastes change drastically. If you do not want to change out the furniture frequently yo might want to stay away from them oriented sets that your child will outgrow quickly.

If you want your child’s room to echo the style of the rest of your home, some manufacturers have a childrens department that have modified versions of their adult furniture. You can dress their room up with colorful bedding, rugs, pillows, and toys that you and your child will love.

Residential Wind Power

Having your own source of cheap energy source brings you more than the environmental advantage. It also cuts your power cost by up to 80% of what you usually pay in your electric bill.

If you decide to go this route and switch to residential wind power, then there are a few things you must consider.

Location Requirements

Check the wind velocity found in your residential area. If the average speed is maintained at approximately 11 miles per hour, then a wind generator is a recommended source of free energy for you. If the area experiences slower wind speed, then consider other free energy sources.

Another factor to consider is the big area required. Typically you must have at least 1 acre of free land space to employ a wind generator. You must also check the location of your area. A windmill near the beach requires smaller wind turbines than those at the hilltop.

After area check-up, you must then choose what generator model best suits your need. A generator typically is composed of a tower, fan blades, and energy storage. Windmill, wind generator, or wind turbine – whatever you call them – varies in design and performance.

You can choose to buy a commercial model. There are several designs out in the market for residential users. These commercial windmills are smaller and lighter compared to industrial windmills. You may find that these ready-made models are expensive; the cheapest costs 1,000 dollars. Consider though, that you will just spend one big amount at first but you will benefit from free energy for a long time.

Assemble Your Own

You can assemble a wind generator of your own if you can’t afford to buy a ready-made model. There are various do-it-yourself guides sold at bookstores online and offline. Compared to commercial ones, a start-from-scratch turbine will cost you as little as 200 dollars only. The engine parts are easily found at a nearby electronics store. As long as you faithfully follow the steps mentioned on the guide, a working finished product is not hard to achieve.

There are issues you need to know about wind power. First is the positioning of your blades. The blades should be placed at an area free from external blunders. It should not be near the ground as it may cause harm to the living things that it will hit. This is one reason why the windmill’s tower should be above normal human height. Higher positioning of the blades also allows catching stronger wind velocity.

Safety And Transportation

The second thing you need to consider is the distance of the turbines from each other. If you utilize more than 1 turbine, make sure that the blades are apart from each other at least twice their diameters.

The third issue will be the transportation and installation of a wind generator. Especially if your location is away from civilization, the transportation of each turbine part is difficult, not to mention its installation.

Purchasing a windmill promises you a continuous supply of electricity. Residential wind power can produce 400 watt to 1 kilowatt of power. This amount of energy is enough to supply a household with small appliances.

New Sofas Are the Way to Go

Sofas aren’t like other pieces of furniture you have in your home. Oh no, these bad boys of the furniture world go way beyond your average recliner or regular old chair. They are big and heavy, last relatively long, and allow you to sit a lot of people. Or, if you have a hide-a-bed sofa, even sleep a couple people when needed. If you really think about it, sofas make modern living pretty comfortable and convenient. In this article I give an overview of some of the more popular styles for your consideration, and try to encourage buying a new sofa over used.

Years ago I owned a used furniture store. It was always amazing to me what people would not only buy for their homes, but what they were willing to spend. I didn’t mind at the time, but in looking back, I actually feel just a tinge guilty. I would routinely have people come in and buy sofas that had been used to the point where they really weren’t all that comfortable anymore. They looked okay, but that’s about it. Plus, they were willing to pay me hundreds of dollars for these little beauties. And thank my lucky stars when I would get in a used leather sofa in decent condition. Cha-ching!

Sofas come in all sorts of styles, fabrics, and configurations. A small settee is just the thing if you need something short and small. Just a cute little place to sit and sort of lay down. Most opt for something larger. Sofas certainly come in those sizes as well. I’ve seen some monsters in my day that approach up to 12′. These are pretty unusual, but if you need a really big one you can find them. Upholstered sofas are probably second in popularity only to leather. Upholstery is nice because of all the colors and textures it is available in. Plus, it cleans up pretty easily with today’s modern cleaners, steamers, and professional services.

If you’ve ever had the joy of lifting one of those heavy sleeper sofas then you know what at chore those can be. But, even though they are super heavy and cumbersome, they fill an important need. If you don’t have lots of extra room in your house or apartment, and have a need to give guests, or others, a place to crash for the night then you would really benefit from having one of these. The modern versions have mattresses in them that are actually quite comfortable. Remember those old dogs from years ago that always seemed to have a bar of some sort that would plague you all night. I don’t know about you, but I can do without a night trying to sleep on a metal bar in the middle of my back. Sofas like that should be, as Descartes would say, “committed to the flames”.

If you are looking at sofas to buy, please do yourself a favor and buy a brand new one. They really are not that much more than a quality used one. Don’t be fooled by a clean appearance. Really check out the cushions and see how much life they have. And don’t forget the underlying structure. Sometimes the frame is so worn or even broken that the couch isn’t worth anything at all. These should be tossed. Go for sofas that are either in like-new condition, or actually get a new one. If you can afford it a new one is the way to go.
